Elyse's Poem

This is my seven year old granddaughter,
Elyse, during this year's Easter egg hunt. And below
is the poem she gave me for my birthday last month. As
you'll see, it has nothing to do with Easter or birthdays.
I love it!

I will and I will not
I can and can't
I don't know
I'm to confuesd
I'm up and down
Hot and cold
I'm sleepy and I'm awake
But if I don't know
I can and can't
I will not

  3. Sounds like a young girl's angst. Well-done and I think you're rightly proud!

Re your comment, I've been called "fishy" before, but never "sci-fishy"! :-)

Hope Elyse keeps up with the poetry! She can!

  4. I love this! I don't know what Elyse was thinking when she wrote this, BUT, it makes me think about the choices we have and our power to take control of our lives in spite of our circumstances. My favorite line is the last... I will not. She has taken a stand and she means business!

  5. Her writing actually captures the way people feel - sometimes you feel good, sometimes you don't. There's confusion about her choices. This simple little poem kind of sums up life. That it was written by a little girl makes me proud and a little scared that she's growing up too fast. There are some big thoughts rattling around in that brain. I do love the "sleepy/awake" line! The last three lines get to me, too. I want her to take the right risks during her life so I want the last line to be "I will." However, if she doesn't know what to do, she seems to be erring on the side of caution instead of leaping into some unknown fire. That's just good reasoning. In any case, I think I've thought about this prose for a little too long! Thanks for posting it, Karen.

  6. Okay, "Jaws" it is! That's a much better name. Have a great weekend!
